Bang, that's how fast it happened. They took me from my home in the middle of the night with just the clothes I was wearing. They didn't even tell us where we were going.
I was sent to a Nazi work camp with my family just because we were Jews. My brothers and I were taken away to a tall brick building almost no windows. I felt sick to my stomach because I didn’t know what they would do to me.
First when I got there they put a 4 inch cut in my arm and it stung, and hurt like crazy. Then they bandaged it and put some drug creams and let it heal. Then a few days later when it had a scab they opened the wound and it hurt even worse than last time and it felt like they cut all the way through my arm then again, they put some different drugs on it and bandaged it up again. Then they examined it every day and touched and prodded with different sharp tools. Some of the creams and drugs burned for hours and it was very painful.
My younger brother Paul, they made him run from dogs with poison on the dog’s sharp teeth. The dog was really fast and one day the dog caught my brother and poisoned him and he died.
My older brother John, they had him hooked up to drugs 24/7. There was never a time I saw him there without a tube in his body or the doctors injecting something in his body. One day he swelled up because of the drugs and he died because he couldn’t breath.
I escaped by not going to bed one night and when the Nazis were at a meeting I walked quietly and jumped out the window of the first story. I landed with a thud that sounded so loud that I thought I might have as well screamed. Just then did I notice the throbbing pain in my left knee. But eventually I got to a nearby town and I went to the doctor and he said I could stay in one of his rooms there and when I got better he said I could be his assistants.
