Dr. William T. Hold, Ph.D., CIC, CPCU, CLU

President of The National Alliance for Insurance Education & Research

Dr. Hold is the co-founder and President of The National Alliance for Insurance Education & Research, a national insurance and risk management education organization. In 1969, the Certified Insurance Counselors (CIC) designation program was developed as the initial offering of The National Alliance. Today, under Dr. Hold’s leadership, The National Alliance has delivered 57,000 educational programs for 2.2 million insurance and risk management professionals. Each year more than 2,500 programs are conducted across the nation, in Puerto Rico, and Mexico.

In addition to the CIC Program, The National Alliance offers designation programs to Certified Risk Managers (CRM), Certified Personal Risk Managers (CPRM), Certified Insurance Service Representatives (CISR), and Certified School Risk Managers (CSRM). All parts of the CIC, CRM, CPRM, CISR, and CSRM programs are available in both the classroom and online. A variety of specialty courses, including the Dynamics Sales Series and William T. Hold Seminars, serve industry professionals at every level and in every job description. The James K. Ruble Seminars are premier education choices exclusively for CIC, CRM, and CPRM designees.

Dr. Hold has been a faculty member of the University of Wisconsin and the University of Texas. At U.T., he was an Associate Professor responsible for the Insurance and Risk Management program within the Graduate School of Business. His writings have been published in academic and trade journals, including the Journal of Risk and Insurance, the Insurance Law Journal, and the CPCU Annals. He’s the author of several books on industry-related topics. Prior to founding the CIC Program, he was the VP of the National Association of Independent Insurers and served as a consultant to the American and Texas Trial Lawyers Association, Federal Trade Commission, Department of Transportation, and Texas State Board of Insurance.

Dr. Hold completed his undergraduate studies at Florida State University. He received his Master’s in 1964 and Ph.D. in 1967 from the University of Wisconsin. He was named to the prestigious Insurance Newscast’s annual list of the 100 Most Powerful People in the Insurance Industry for six years during the award’s existence. He received the Dr. Henry C. Martin Award of Industry Achievement, named after the founder of The Rough Notes Company. In 2012 he was included as one of the 25 Living Legends in Insurance by Property Casualty 360. He was also inducted into the Florida State University College of Business Hall of Fame. In honor of his contributions to the industry and professional education, the College of Business at Florida State University has established a foundation and program in his name - the Dr. William T. Hold/The National Alliance Program in Risk Management and Insurance.

Mr. William J. Hold, M.B.A, CRM, CISR

CEO of The National Alliance for Insurance Education & Research

William Hold is the CEO of The National Alliance for Insurance Education & Research. He works with carrier representatives and agency associates to create education and training paths that ensure risk and insurance professionals have the knowledge and skills necessary to thrive. William currently serves on the board of trustees for Gamma Iota Sigma, the international business fraternity for students of insurance, risk management, and actuarial science. He’s also on the advisory board of the University of Central Oklahoma Insurance and Risk Management Program.

William received his Bachelor’s degree in finance from the University of Alabama, and his Master’s degree in Business Administration from Florida State University. He earned his Certified Insurance Service Representative (CISR) designation in 2007 and his Certified Risk Manager (CRM) designation in 2013. He currently resides in Austin, Texas with his wife Johnna and two children, William and Anna.

President John E. Thrasher, J.D.

John Thrasher, a Florida State University alumnus and former state legislator, is the University’s 15th president. Thrasher assumed the presidency on Nov. 10, 2014 after a successful career as a state legislator, businessman, lobbyist, and lawyer. As president, Thrasher has focused his efforts on elevating FSU’s reputation as a preeminent research institution. He has presided over a $1 billion fundraising campaign, advanced the university’s academic and research mission, championed diversity and inclusion, and welcomed the best and brightest students in the University’s history.

Thrasher earned a Bachelor’s degree in business from Florida State in 1965. After graduating, he joined the U.S. Army where he received the Army Commendation Medal in Germany and was awarded two Bronze Stars for his service in Vietnam. He was honorably discharged as a captain in 1970.

After the army, Thrasher returned to his alma mater to earn a law degree with honors in 1972. He worked in a private law practice in Daytona Beach and Tallahassee for several years before returning to Jacksonville to serve as general counsel of the Florida Medical Association, a position he held for 20 years. He also served as “of counsel” to the Jacksonville law firm of Smith, Hulsey & Busey from 1996 to 2008. Thrasher was a partner of Southern Strategy Group, a Tallahassee-based governmental relations firm, from 2001 to 2009. His political career began in 1986 when he was elected to the Clay County School Board where he served as Vice Chairman and Chairman. He then became a state representative in 1992 and was re-elected without opposition in 1994, 1996, and 1998.

John Thrasher was unanimously elected as the speaker of the Florida House of Representatives in 1998. He was elected to the Florida Senate in 2009 and subsequently re-elected. He served as chairman for the Republican Party of Florida in 2010. From 2001 to 2005, Thrasher was the first chair of Florida State University’s Board of Trustees. He was a key supporter of legislation that brought funding to the development of FSU’s College of Medicine. He has a building at the college named in his honor. In 2016, he was inducted into the FSU College of Business Hall of Fame. He currently serves on the College Football Playoff Board of Managers. Born in Columbia, South Carolina, Thrasher moved to Florida as a child and grew up in Jacksonville. He and his wife Jean have three children and eight grandchildren.

Mr. Jeffrey Driver, J.D., ARM, DFASHRM, MBA

Jeff Driver is the Principal and Chief Consultant at Soteria Risk Works and is the Faculty Associate of Edson College of Nursing and Health Innovation at Arizona Statue University in Phoenix, Arizona. He’s also the Executive Vice President for Stanford's captive insurance company, the Stanford University Medical Indemnity & Trust Insurance Company, domiciled in Bermuda. In his prior position, Jeff was the Chief Risk Officer and Director of Regulatory Advocacy at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts. With over 20 years of experience as a risk management professional, he’s taken on the responsibility of managing the enterprise risk in community, tertiary, and academic medical centers. Duties have included strategic planning, incorporating and managing subsidiary insurance companies, assuring organization corporate compliance, claims and litigation management, patient safety and loss control, benefits administration, employment practices consulting, and the development, reorganization, and implementation of alternate risk financing programs. Risk financing designs have included self-insured trusts, captives, segregated portfolios, integrated risk programs, as well as commercial placements.

Jeff holds a Juris Doctor from Thomas Jefferson School of Law in San Diego, California, a Master of Business Administration from Cleveland State University, and a Bachelor of Science in Allied Health Professions from Ohio State University. He’s a member of the State Bar of California and has been awarded the Distinguished Fellow (DFASHRM) designation by The American Society for Healthcare Risk Management (ASHRM), along with an Associate in Risk Management (ARM) by the Insurance Institute of America. He’s a past president of ASHRM and has been a multiyear member of ASHRM's Board of Directors as well as Steering Committee Chair of ASHRM's JCAHO Liaison, Advocacy, and Legislative & Regulatory Affairs Task Forces.

Jeff is a frequent speaker and author on risk management issues and has served as faculty to ASHRM's Barton Certificate in Healthcare Risk Management Program and the Harvard Medical School. He’s a faculty member for The National Alliance CRM Program. He was awarded membership to the Risk Management Honor Roll in April 2008 by Business Insurance Magazine. Jeff is the Founder and President of MedRisk Defenders, LLC, which provides global strategic risk management advice and consultation throughout the health service sector.

Mr. Donald E. Bowles, CIC, CRM, CPCU, CLU, ARM

Don Bowles is the Vice Chairman and Partner of McQueary Henry Bowles Troy—A Marsh & McLennan Agency, LLC Company. During the course of his 40+ year career in the industry, he’s been very active with the IIA of Texas, serving on their Board of Directors from 1986 to 1994 and as President from 1992–1993. In 2004 he was the recipient of the Drex G. Foreman Award. He also served on the Board of Directors for IIA Dallas from 1987 to 1992 and was President from 1985 to 1986. In 1991, the IIA of Dallas awarded him with their Distinguished Service Award.

Don has provided leadership for The National Alliance by serving on the CIC Board of Governors from 1977 to 1982. Has was also a Chairman from 1980 to 1981. In addition, he’s a founding member of The National Alliance Research Academy and served two terms on the Academy’s Board of Directors from 1982 to 1993. Don is a retired faculty member, having taught at CIC Agency Management Institute.

Don earned his Bachelor’s at Vanderbilt University and his MBA at the University of Texas at Austin, where he studied under then-UT Professor/now President of The National Alliance, Dr. William T. Hold.

Mr. E. Ryan Bowles, CIC, CRM

Ryan Bowles began his career in the insurance and risk management industry in 1998 and joined MHBT in 2000. With a professional background in the non-profit sector, Bowles naturally gravitated toward serving mission-driven organizations. The team, which serves social service organizations, faith-based institutions, colleges and universities, and senior living centers across the Southwest, grew to become one of the largest practice groups in the organization. “There are no better people and no bigger hearts than the clients we serve and the team I have the privilege of working alongside,” says Ryan. MHBT was acquired by Marsh & McLennan Agency in 2015 to become MMA Southwest.

In 2019, Bowles became President of the Dallas Business Insurance operation and is responsible for strategic planning, client retention and development, and talent recruitment. Previously, Ryan directed youth programs for the YMCA of Metropolitan Dallas and served abroad as a World Fellow with the YMCA of Egypt. He continues to mentor youth through his volunteer service at the YMCA.

Ryan is an Eagle Scout, a graduate of St. Mark’s School of Texas, and earned a Bachelor of Arts from Austin College. His hobbies include spending time with his family, water skiing, hunting, backpacking, cycling, and volunteering alongside his wife in their church’s marriage ministry, where they serve as small-group leaders.

Mr. Michael J. Bosworth, CIC, AAI, CWCA

Since joining the family insurance firm founded by his father, Michael Bosworth has extended the agency's influence as one of the leading insurance agencies in Tyler and throughout east Texas. During his years as an insurance professional, Michael has earned the prestigious National Alliance designation of Certified Insurance Counselor (CIC), is an Accredited Advisor of Insurance (AAI), and a Certified Workers Comp Advisor (CWCA). Michael specializes in risk management consulting and oversees all other aspects of the firm, carrying on the legacy of service for which Bosworth & Associates is known for throughout the region. In 1990, he received the Young Agent of the Year award from the Independent Insurance Agents of Texas.

A graduate of Texas Tech University, Michael is involved in many professional and community activities.

Ms. Cambridge Bosworth, AINS

Cambridge joined her father Michael Bosworth at the family insurance agency in September 2018, bringing her passion for the industry in full force. She completed undergraduate studies and earned her Master’s at Texas A&M University before undertaking an internship at Chubb Insurance in New York City. She spent the beginning of her insurance career on the carrier side at Central Insurance Companies in Dallas where she embraced excellent training and advancement to a Commercial Lines Underwriter. Cambridge has completed the Associate in General Insurance (AINS) designation and is in process of earning a Certified Insurance Counselor (CIC) designation, which she plans to complete this year. In a producer role, she focuses on commercial and personal lines as well as overall marketing opportunities for the agency.

Mr. J. Ralph Borneman, Jr., CIC

Ralph has been an independent insurance agent and broker since 1962. He co-founded Body-Borneman Insurance in 1969 and continues to serve as President and Commercial Insurance Executive for Body-Borneman Insurance and Financial Services, LLC. He was the past President of the Professional Insurance Agents Association of Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Delaware. He served as Chairman of the Board of Governors for the Society of Certified Insurance Counselors, National Faculty Member for The National Alliance for Insurance Education & Research, and participated in various committees for The National Alliance. He served on the Board of Directors of National Penn Bank for 25 years. Ralph is currently a member of the Board of Directors of Erie Indemnity Company, a Fortune 500 Company, where he serves on their Executive Committee and is Chairman of their Strategy Committee. He received his Certified Insurance Counselor (CIC) designation in 1979.

Ralph is a graduate of Muhlenberg College with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. In 2010 he was honored by the college’s Alumni Association as a recipient of their 2010 Alumni Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his distinguished and exceptional attainment in life, which reflects substantially on Muhlenberg College.

Mr. Bradley Borneman, CIC

Bradley A. Borneman is President and Owner of Body-Borneman Associates, Inc., and has owned this second-generation agency since 2004.

Brad joined Body-Borneman after graduating from the University of Richmond in 1986. Following a mentoring period of approximately six months, he began selling commercial lines insurance. As he became successful in commercial lines sales, he began learning about agency management and assuming more management responsibilities. At the time Brad joined Body-Borneman, the agency had 13 employees and two offices. They now have 44 employees who work from the four offices located in suburban Philadelphia.

During Brad’s tenure at Body-Borneman, he has expanded three unique niche areas of in-house service: a dedicated claims administration department, a bond department, and a risk management division that includes staff safety consultants. The agency now has approximately 17,000 clients, many of whom were attracted to the agency by these services.

Bradley earned the CIC designation in 1996 and has served on advisory committees for Erie, Utica, and Harleysville insurance companies.

Mr. Ronald Patterson, CIC

Ron began his insurance career in 1973 as a marketing representative with Safeco Insurance in the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex. He later relocated to Oklahoma where he served as the marketing representative for the state of Oklahoma from 1973 to 1975. In 1975 he was promoted to marketing manager, which allowed him to move his family back to Dallas where he served in that position until 1977. He then found an opportunity to go into the agency business in 1977 where he learned the personal lines, financial services, and commercial lines business. He opened Ron Patterson Insurance Agency in 1983 with one customer service representative and represented three different insurance companies. The agency became a Travelers Elite Agency in 2001. The Elite status was maintained up until 2009 when it was discontinued by Travelers. He served as an enthusiastic member of the Travelers National Producer Council for three years and has served on a number of other insurance company councils during his career as an independent agent.

Professionally, Ron has served three different terms on the Board of Directors for the Independent Insurance Agents of Dallas and two terms on the Dallas Association of Health Underwriters (DAHU).

When he opened the Ron Patterson Insurance Agency in 1983, the agency had a little over $500,000 in property and casualty volume and one experienced customer service representative. Early on, he learned the value of providing benefits to his clients. In 2011 the name was changed to Patterson & Associates Insurance Agency, Inc.

Ron now works exclusively as a benefits risk advisor for the agency and helps with the retention of long-term clients. He enjoys spending time with his wife. Ron and his wife attend Wylie Church of Christ in Wylie, Texas, where he serves as a Deacon and Elder. He’s also a past President of the Garland Rotary Club

Mr. Ben Patterson, CIC, CRM

Ben began his insurance career in August of 1996 upon graduating with a BBA in Marketing from Harding University in Searcy, Arkansas. Since the beginning of his career, he has committed himself to learning the business and now holds both the Certified Insurance Counselor (CIC) and Certified Risk Managers (CRM) designations. He’s a licensed agent in 27 states and a licensed Risk Manager. Beginning in 2007, Ben served his local association, the Independent Insurance Agents of Dallas, as a member of the board of directors. He finished as President of IIAD in 2014. Over the past several years he has served on several national and local advisory councils and was also recognized in Dallas Business Journal’s List of 40 Under 40 in 2013.

Professionally, he has served as President of Patterson & Associates Insurance Agency since 2011. Ben Patterson took over as President of the agency as the transition began under new leadership. The management team consisted of Ben Patterson (President), Stephen Pine (VP), Micah Hahn (Corporate Secretary), Rustin Goodgion (Partner), and Dan Thomas, (Partner). Today the agency employs 25 support staff, including CSR’s, accounting and claims reps, and 15 risk advisors. They represent every quality carrier in the marketplace for P&C and benefits. The agency’s awards and recognitions have become significant.

The agency has been recognized as an IIABA Best Practices Agency every year since 2013 and was notified at the beginning of August that they’ll remain on the list in 2019. The agency has also consistently been recognized by the Dallas Business Journal as one of their Best Places To Work in Dallas. Several risk advisors with the agency are consistently recognized as Best Insurance Agents in Dallas by D Magazine. Commitment to the community is an important part of the organization and Ben has shown this commitment through his involvement with the church, the Chamber of Commerce, and various local charities.
