Dr. Phaedra Livingstone Named Co-editor of Museum Anthropology
Dr. Phaedra Livingstone, Museum and Cultural Management program coordinator, has become the co-editor of the journal Museum Anthropology - a peer-reviewed scholarly journal that reflects work within museum culture through its articles, commentaries, and reviews.
Dr. Livingstone’s responsibilities for the journal, along with her co-editor, Dr. Emily Stokes-Rees, includes, “the editorial direction of the journal, selecting peer reviewers, communicating with authors and special issues editors, coordinating with production staff at Wiley Press and the American Anthropological Association, and reporting on activities as board members of the Council for Museum Anthropology.”
This exciting and deserving role for Dr. Livingstone has also positively impacted Centennial College. As Dr. Livingstone notes, “Centennial is the only college listed on the masthead for the journal, alongside an illustrious list of international institutions. Centennial is already one of the top research colleges in Canada but this will add to the research profile of the college and increase the reach of the college in the museum field specifically.”
Congratulations Dr. Livingstone on this exciting venture!
Interactive Media Management Students Showcase Their Work at "Solved!"
On October 16, students from the Interactive Media Management program held their annual trade show, which this year was titled: “Solved!".
The event allows students the opportunity to showcase their hard work in a professional environment and is an assignment component for their course Career Networking.
The event was a great success and saw the students present some amazing interactive apps and experiences.
Welcome Harmony Nadjiwon - Indigenous Storyteller in Residence
Centennial College has been making great strides in ensuring Indigenous voices are heard and implemented. Part of this initiative can be seen directly at the Story Arts Centre.
This fall, Harmony Nadjiwon was welcomed to campus as the first Indigenous storyteller in residence. Harmony has been doing amazing work on campus to help faculty and students acknowledge and learn about Indigenous history and practices, as well as how to incorporate key messages from Indigenous culture within course work.
Story Arts Centre Students Host Toronto-Danforth Candidates for a Local Debate
On October 10, just over a month into their studies, students from the journalism, public relations and broadcasting programs came together to tell the story of the election in our wider community of Toronto-Danforth. This took weeks of preparation by the students as well as support from Centennial’s faculty and staff to ensure that the event was a success.
By hosting the debate, these students kept the community of Toronto-Danforth informed on important issues as they prepared to cast their vote on Election Day. The result was hundreds of residents participating by either watching the debate at home on YouTube and Facebook or coming to campus to watch in person.
Take a look behind the scenes and see how the students pulled everything together.
Remembrance Day Ceremony Honours War Veterans
We held our annual Remembrance Day service on October 8. Not only was it a day to honour the men and women who fought, and continue to fight, for Canada, but it was also National Aboriginal Veteran’s Day and allowed for attendees to remember and give thanks to Indigenous soldiers and their contributions to military service. The observance, which you can watch below thanks to the Broadcasting-Radio, Television, Film & Digital Media students, also included contributions from our Music Industry Arts and Performance, Journalism, Theatre Arts and Performance, and Museum and Cultural management programs.
Game Jam Takes Over the Story Arts Centre
Engagement week certainly lived up to its name at the Story Arts Centre! The first official campus-wide Game Jam took place from October 21 - 23 and showcased the creative talents of students from various programs within Centennial, as well as outside Centennial.
Brian Sinasac, one of the organizers of the event and coordinator of our Game - Development program, gave the students a theme on the first day of the event. From there, the students went into their groups and had just three days to create a game before they shared what they crafted with everyone else.
The event was a great opportunity to collaborate with other students, learn new techniques, and strengthen skills within game development without the pressures that come along with a competition.
The Story Arts Centre is a Global Game Jam Site!
The Global Game Jam® (GGJ) is the world's largest game jam event and will be held from January 31 - February 2. The weekend stirs a global creative buzz in games, while at the same time exploring the process of development, be it programming, iterative design, narrative exploration or artistic expression. The GGJ encourages people with all kinds of backgrounds to participate and contribute to this global spread of game development and creativity.

A powerful exploration of marriage in Bangladesh, the film also follows three women in Dhaka as they struggle with abuse and social pressure, laying bare the sacrifices made by women in the name of marital expectation.

Islamic Heritage Month at the Story Arts Centre
October was Islamic Heritage Month and our inaugural Taste of Islam event was held on October 29. The event was organized by Sanjana Khan with the help of many others from across the college.
It was a huge success and raised positive awareness of Islam in an open and casual way. In addition to Middle Eastern sweets and tea, the event featured a cabinet display of Islamic artifacts and books, posters and a slideshow honouring Islamic contributions throughout history.
Visitors were also able to have their names written in Arabic and English on canvas blocks, designed and created by Sanjana's 13-year-old daughter Maryam.
We are looking forward adding more Islamic Heritage Month events in 2020.
