Earth Day Together we can make a difference

With "Together We Can Make a Difference" the theme, Story Preservation is pleased to be partnering with DearTomorrow to introduce a new online student project.

Like all SPI projects, this environmental project is Real-World Relevant, Engaging, and, most of all, it's an Important reminder that we ALL have a role to play in sustaining the health, well-being, and beauty of our fragile planet.

Through SPI audio and related projects, students will better understand the natural and man-made causes of global warming and why NOW is the time to act.

Send A Letter to Your Future Self or to Your Future ChildrenĀ and join in with a chorus of others committing to take personal action on climate change. Ask yourself: What will be my tomorrow? What can I do today to ensure a healthy, clean Earth for my Future Self and for those who I love?

  • DearTomorrow is a digital platform and archive project where people share letters, photos, and videos to their future self about their promise to take action on climate change. Messages are shared on deartomorrow.org and through social media, traditional media, and arts projects to increase motivation and open up a conversation about why we need to act now on climate change.
  • The goal is to reach over 20 million people with 10,000 personal messages by 2020.
  • All messages will be available in the years 2030 and 2050.

The project begins with students listening to the audio of Environmentalist Gus Speth, found on SPI's 4-12 Learning Lab site. Speth, founder of the Natural Resources Defense Council and the former Dean of the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies, talks about the history of the environmental movement and humankind's role in global warming. Additional resources are available on the site, including fully developed and NGSS-aligned lesson plans and related links for in-depth classroom study.

Students then access the DearTomorrow site and write a letter to either their Future Self or their Future Children on the topic of climate change. The SPI / DearTomorrow project combines Science with English Literacy - and, for those so inclined, Art and / or Technology - as students make their voices heard, ultimately 10,000 strong.
