Innovate Monarch Reflection Tiffany Saka

About Me

INNOVATE Monarch Experience

We were challenged with the task of helping African American and Latinx students know the resources available to them at ODU while reducing the stigma of asking for help. To tackle this we had to re-imagine how students are introduced to the resources, and that's we Wear your Crown proud comes in.

We will target freshman, first generation, and transfer students to be a part of this program but anyone may join.

We created a map quest program that will give each student an opportunity to use their resources and set a good foundation for after this program. Each week groups of 5-10 that we have formed through our assessment will be sent a task that they must complete to win points for their team.

Along the way student’s will keep a running slide show called their King’s log in which they will be creating maps about their experience in the program and about how to use each resource.

Mindsets of a Human-Centered Designer

1. Innovation is for Everyone

I practiced the Innovation is for Everyone mindset when I had to ask other Old Dominion University students and faculty about ODU readiness for African American and Latinx students. This taught me that being creative and thinking outside the box using different methods leads to new possibilities.

2. Know Your Why

I practice ed the Know Your Why mindset when I had to come up with our mission which was 'how might we communicate about our campuses extensive resources for African American & Lantix ODU students in a way that would reduce the stigma for getting'. This taught me how to focus on what the real issue my group wanted to solve.

3. Show & Tell

I practiced the Show & Tell mindset when I had to acknowledge as students that we don't like asking for help even when there is resources out there and it is being offered. This taught me being able to know about the resources from the start and having them constantly being presented to the student makes it more present. The ability for the student to know that they have other students and staff in this program to ask for help because they are going through the process together enables the student to be more comfortable with asking for help because it is available to them.

4. Radical Collaboration

I practiced the Radical Collaboration mindset when I had to get together with my group of diverse people and I had to work with them to figure out how to help students gain knowledge about resources. This taught me that a diverse group of people can get together to increase awareness of those areas and lead to success.

5. Empathetic & Human-Centered

I practiced the Empathetic & Human-Centered mindset when I had to understand the people for whom we are designing for. This taught me to listen and implement the students desires.

6. Embracing Ambiguity

I practiced the Embracing Ambiguity mindset when I had to get of my comfort zone and ask questions to the faculty and had to change our product idea several times. This taught me to be comfortable with change.

7. Iterate, Iterate, Iterate

I practiced the Iterate, Iterate, Iterate mindset when I had to go over and edit the final product several times with our mentors looking over and making edits. This taught me to patient and opened my eyes to how to improve our idea.

Applying Innovate Experiences in the Future

This program helped me develop my critical thinking skills and teamwork abilities by preparing to prepare me for my future career. Design Thinking is beneficial for the eventual large scale problems I will face in the future. Whether that be planning on how to start my own practice or a patients longtime dental journey. Design Thinking is an essential skill to develop.

My goal for that I intend to continue to work with in the Design Thinking process would be the ITERATE, ITERATE, ITERATE phase. I feel as though projects can always get better and there is always room to improve on. Even if I feel as though it is working fine someone else could find another way to improve of the project.
