Welcome Week - Fall 2019

"My experience in ASSC didn't go at all exactly how I pictured it. I gained a family, another home outside of home..."
For Welcome Week 2019, ASSC welcomed Skyline College students, faculty, and staff with free food and refreshments, a video game truck, live music, dance performances, and lots of fun! There was also a special election that gave some students the opportunity to be part of council.

Fall 2019 Leadership Retreat at Camp Monte Toyon

Our ASSC Fall Leadership Retreat was a huge success! We stayed at Camp Monte Toyon with no WiFi, no cell service, a lot of ghost encounters, a high ropes course, and ASSC bonding. Our ASSC student officers grew a lot in three days from the leadership training and planning.

LatinX Heritage Month

ASSC had a community altar (Día de Ancestros) to honor LatinX culture and history.

9/16/19 LatinX Heritage Month: Celebración de las Americas

"I'm most proud of the events where ASSC would nearly be full-squad and we got to express our enjoyment and presence of being together in student council."
We celebrated our ASSC LatinX Heritage Kick Off Celebration with a LatinX Flag ceremony, followed by the distribution of free pupusas. We also had lowrider cars on display and our vendor, Maria Cruz, was selling traditional Mexican jewelry and art.

Environmental Science (Building 12) Opening Ceremony

ASSC attended the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony at Building 12 (Environmental Science Building) to celebrate Skyline College's 50th Anniversary.

Filipino History Month

Share three important things that you learned: 1) Bayanihan. 2) Growing while having fun. 3) Cooperation is important in order to achieve a goal.
ASSC helped out for the Filipino History Month opening celebration. There was free lumpia, free mini Philippine flags, entertainment, and educational performances supported by Filipino Student Union (FSU) and the Kababayan Learning Community.

10/12/19 Kababayan 15-Year Anniversary

Fun fact: the very first learning community to make its debut at Skyline College was Kababayan!

10/14/19 Traditional Filipino Tattoo Lecture with Lane Wilcken

Lane Wilcken presented a Filipino tattoo lecture and demonstrated a Batok demo on ASSC advisor, Alvin Gubatina.

10/17/19 College Lecture Series - Loa Niumeitolu

Loa Niumeitolu shared her story as a queer Tongan woman and how she navigated successfully through higher education for our Fall 2019 College Lecture Series. Thank you Loa for coming!
"I learned about the hierarchy system and how students can impact the ladder"

10/31/19 Skylloween

ASSC celebrated Skylloween with a costume contest for "Best DIY", "Best Meme", & "Best Cosplay"!

11/7/19 1st Annual ASSC Tonga Day

For ASSC's first Annual Tonga Day, we recognized its leaders as chiefs today during Taumafa Kava (Kava Ceremony). Our VPSS Dr. Garcia held position of "houeikki", also honored was Dean Escobar, (Interim) Manager Alvin Gubatina, our Executive officers & ASSC Senators. There was even a Tongan Culture Regalia Showcase (Fashion Show) and dance performances. We thank the Tongan community of East Palo Alto for coming to San Bruno to teach our student body about the Tongan culture and protocol of respect.

Skyline College 50th Gala

On November 15, we reflected back on Skyline College's previous years and achievement at the 50th Anniversary Gala.

Florida Trip/Leadership Training

Some of our ASSC officers went to Florida for an NCSL leadership conference and officer bonding at Disney World.

Lunar New Year 2020

ASSC held a celebration for Chinese New Year (Year of the Rat) with free snacks, boba, red envelopes, entertainment, and a photo booth!

Black History Month

Leadership Workshop with Raven Solomon

Raven Solomon came to Skyline College for a private workshop about multigenerational leadership and skill building! The ASSC worked with ASTEP, WMLA, and BAM to welcome her.

Black History Month - Kick Off Panel

ASSC celebrated the Black History Month Kick-Off event with free giveaways, music, and featured speaker Lasana Hotep, ExecutiveDirector of the Equity Institute! Thank you Lasana Hotep for coming out to educate our students!

Last Black Man in San Francisco Screening

Our Black History Month Film Screening of The Last Black Man in San Francisco here at Skyline College was packed with over 80 students present! There was also a movie discussion and Stunna & Gunna (actors from this movie) showed up and surprised our campus community! We appreciate you both for coming through!

Spring 2020 Retreat at Granlibakken

The ASSC went to Granlibakken for the weekend to work on team building, equitable program mapping, and sharpening skill set to better serve the student body.

ASSC Online Programming

Women's History Month 2020 Social Media Campaign

To celebrate Women's History Month during shelter-in-place, ASSC held a social media campaign for students to honor an admirable and influential woman in their life.

ASSC Online Songkran Lecture

Thousands of Burmese, Cambodian, Laotian, and Thai people worldwide celebrated Maha Songkran (also known as Thingyan or the Buddhist New Year)! Center for Student Life Assistant and ASSC Advisor Ryan Samn, a Cambodian cultural expert, and ASSC Senator, Khant explain popular traditions, beliefs, history, and how people can celebrate with us even at home.

My COVID5 - 5 Commitments to Wellness

Due to COVID19, we created a series to share different methods of wellness to our community. We also had a social media campaign asking people "What are 5 things you are doing during quarantine for your wellness?"

Pacific Islander Heritage Month

In celebration of Pacific Islander Heritage Month, the ASSC collaborated with our Pacific community leaders to host 3 cultural online workshops.

Dr. Allyson Tintiangco-Cubales & Dr. Jocyl Sacramento shared with us their presentation on growing Pinayism in a pandemic with sharing space and building community. "Pinayism is a revolutionary action. Pinayism is a self-affirming condition or conduct. Pinayism is a self-determining system or belief"
